Here are enough ideas to keep the party going all day long!
Groundhog Day Party Planning
- Hang up all of the artwork you've done this week to decorate.
- Watch online to see if "Phil" saw his shadow or not. Discuss if your child's prediction was correct or not.
- Make a groundhog ear headband or groundhog mask for your child (and you!) to wear. Bigactivities.com has another fun headband idea your child can make. Everyone can wear all brown, too!
- Bring out the tunnel or box or laundry basket again for some burrow fun.
- Make shadows with a flashlight and objects around the house.
- Have a spring snack or winter snack. See post here.
- Make the paper plate groundhog craft (posted below) for dramatic play. Love Bug loves when I play peek-a-boo with the groundhog and it also enforces "up" and "down" with her. Sweet Girl likes acting out the different songs we've learned with him.
- Make the groundhog pudding dessert I posted earlier in the week.
- Hide groundhog cards around the house. (These were featured on a previous post.) These cards are also good for practicing one to one counting. I printed two sheets (on photo paper to make them more durable) so we would have twelve cards to work with.
Supplies needed: two paper plates, groundhog template, craft stick, crayons or markers, scissors, tape
What to do:
- Color and cut out the groundhog template.
- Tape the groundhog template to a craft stick.
- Cut one of the paper plates in half. This is going to be the ground.
- Color the half of a paper plate green and brown. Add a couple of flowers for your groundhog to munch on!
- Color the top half of the full size paper plate blue. This is going to be the sky.
- Add a sun or clouds to the "sky." You could even cut out a construction paper sun or use cotton balls for clouds.
- Tape the half of a paper plate to the bottom half of the full size paper plate, BUT make sure to leave a big enough opening for your child to stick his/her groundhog in and out. *I figured glue stick was not going to stick well enough or put up well with the girls playing with it.
- Stick in your groundhog and have some fun!
Let your child act out the following song with his/her new friend. The girls just loved this song and we did it over and over!
sung to "Are You Sleeping?"

Little groundhog, little groundhog,
Underground, underground.
Now it's time to wake up.
Now it's time to wake up.
Yawn and stretch.
Yawn and stretch.
Little groundhog, little groundhog,
Underground, underground.
Climb out of your burrow.
Climb out of your burrow.
Look around.
Look around.
Little groundhog, little groundhog,
Underground, underground.
Do you see your shadow?
Do you see your shadow?
Down you run!
Down you run!
I'd love to know if you have some ideas for a Groundhog Day party!
